How we work

OUR WORK IN ITALY

We promote a culture of solidarity, social commitment and respect for human rights in Italy. We do so through sensitisation campaigns, developmental education projects, advocacy and communications works, and fundraising.

SENSITISATION CAMPAIGNS
Intervita works both independently and by collaborating with other organisations, developing sensitisation campaigns throughout Italy with a view to informing and educating public opinion on issues concerning development and the respect for human rights.
In 2009, Intervita launched ‘Siamo Pari!’, a major communications and sensitisation campaign on gender equality. Alongside this, we continue to promote the campaign ‘Vite Invisibili’ against the sexual exploitation of children.
In collaboration with other organisations, Intervita also upholds the ‘Campagna per l’Educazione Globale’ (Campaign for World Education) and the ‘Campagna del consiglio d’Europa contro le Punizioni Corporali per i bambini’ (Council of Europe Campaign against Corporal Punishment for children).

DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATION
Intervita believes in the fundamental value of education as the key to educating responsible world citizens. This is why we develop educational courses and specific laboratories for the various levels of schooling on matters linked to inter-culture, human rights and the fight against poverty. The courses take place in the form of class laboratories based on teaching techniques aiming to stimulate the active participation of children and teenagers.

ADVOCACY
Intervita works with the other organisations of the civil society to take the voice of the world’s poor to the agenda of Italian and international politics. To this end, we work on the major networks in defence of the human rights of children and solidarity, such as the Italian Coalition Against Poverty (GCAP), the working group on the Convention for the Rights of Children (CRC), the Associazione Italiana Turismo Responsabile (AITR – Italian Association for Responsible Tourism), the Coordinamento per i diritti dell'infanzia e dell'adolescenza (PIDIDA – coordination For the Rights of Children and Adolescents), the Committee for the promotion and protection of human rights and the Observatory of civil society on AIDS, Malaria and TB.

COMMUNICATION AND FUNDRAISING
Intervita believes that it is fundamentally important to unite the need to raise funds for the promotion of development projects in the world’s south, with the need to develop sensitivity towards the problems of poorer countries in public opinion in northern countries. With this dual objective, Intervita targets different types of interlocutors: the Association’s supporters to provide updates on Intervita projects and initiatives, and the general public to sensitise new, different population bands to the problems of the world’s south and the Association’s work.

OUR DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN THE WORLD’S SOUTH

We work in the south of the world to improve living conditions of children and communities through our development projects.

LONG-TERM INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT
Intervita set itself the immediate objective of developing a highly efficient intervention model in the fight against poverty and to improve the living conditions of the more disadvantaged populations. This is why we have embraced the philosophy of a long-term integrated development. We have set up food safety and economy lines around the major sectors of health and education, most linked to the causes of poverty, and the four transversal sectors Children’s rights, Protection of gender, Environment and Community participation that strengthens the complete approach taken by our programmes and projects.
These are planned for the long-term, as needed to reach the objectives of uprooting poverty and allowing local populations to become self-sufficient.

THE TERRITORIES OF INTERVENTION
We have carefully analysed the needs of each country, thereby identifying the areas most vulnerable to poverty conditions. We have therefore chosen to concentrate our efforts here. Not only the long-term, but also the concentration of social investment in a specific area, are fundamental strategies for the success of our projects, for the credibility recognised for the organisations involved in the field and for the appreciation by the communities in which we work.
In the territories in which Intervita works, we develop various projects in a coordinated, simultaneous manner. This allows us to generate synergies and accumulate valid experience and awareness of the area of intervention.
