Intervita works in Ecuador
Why we workThe country’s economy in recent years has undergone a significant transformation: the political and social instability deriving from the economic crisis of the 1990s, and the effects of the introduction of the dollar into the local economy as an exchange currency, have led to an increase in poverty and violence in the outskirts of large cities such as Quito, the capital, and Guayaquil, the most densely populated city in Ecuador.
In the country’s most rural areas, the situation is even more critical, worsened by the devastating climatic phenomenon El Niño: its effects, droughts and flooding, lead to epidemics of yellow fever, typhoid, cholera and dengue (known as the 'bone-breaking' fever), as well as millions of dollars worth of damage.
Our aimsA right to life: health food education and development.
How we workThe projects target various subjects in the region of Guayaquil: children, families, teachers, communities. Intervita uses long–distance support as the main form of aid in the various areas of intervention with specific objectives.
Description of the project

Health Objective
The health project is focused on the prevention and education for hygiene in schools and specialised medical assistance. Intervita has chosen to support training courses for health workers and teachers, to implement health prevention procedures within schools, setting up ‘hygiene corners’ to educate young students to healthy lifestyles and habits, and thereby improve the health of children, reducing the incidence of preventable diseases.
With regard to specific medical assistance for children under the age of 15, Intervita sends specialised doctors to the communities and has set up collaborations with specialised centres for emergencies and particularly serious pathologies.

Food Objective
Within the total community Health programme, particular attention is paid to food habits, with food diagnosis and education. In this sense, Intervita has produced a manual on food specifying the nutritional properties of each item with suggestions as to its preparation.

Education Objective
The programme looks to intervene in various areas, in order to improve the low quality basic education. Intervita’s actions include: development of infrastructures and equipment necessary for an environment that is suited to school learning; supply of teaching materials and school accessories for school centres. The activity also aims to strengthen the internal
organisation of schools, to qualify and train teachers and educators, involving families and the community itself in decision-making processes aiming to improve children’s education.
