Project Educating Citizenship - Brazil
Why we workBrazil is probably the country with the worst income distribution: 10% of the better-off population manages 47.45% of total wealth. Despite the enormous economic, financial and technological potential, 32 million Brazilians go hungry, more than 55 million live in conditions of poverty and 7 million children live at the edges of society. In the state of Cearà, the percentage of children aged between 4 and 12 attending school is around 60%. For the remaining 40%, the alternative is life on the streets with consequent ready exposure to abuse. This situation is particularly seen in the city of Fortaleza, where thousands of children and adolescents are subjected to sexual exploitation by local and foreign tourists.
Our aimsThe project aims to raise the levels of education and literacy, contrasting school absenteeism, child street life, child labour and the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.
How we workWith the project ‘Educating Citizenship’, Intervita will work in nine community centres of the local association PASTORAL DO MENOR, providing assistance to children and adolescents in the main streets of the city centre of Fortaleza. In this way, 700 children will be monitored through long-distance support, and 200 adolescents and families will benefit from focused support interventions.
Description of the project

The project aims to raise the levels of education and literacy, contrasting school absenteeism, child street life, child labour and the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents. To attain this objective, work within the community centres is fundamental, where artistic instruction will take place through theatre, dance, music, cultural expressions and sport. At the same time, seminars will be held on human rights, citizenships, affection and sexual education.
In addition to student access to community activities, the training and responsibility processes of teachers will be strongly supported, on matters concerning the childhood sector, education policies, proposals intended to deal with the key problems highlighted by the project. Again in the collaboration framework, educational supervision is planned with inspections and monitoring of schooling, participation in school meetings, and the preparation and motivation of parents for their greater involvement (e.g. participation in school boards, etc.).

The project cornerstone lies in the techniques taught by famous Brazilian pedagogue, Paulo Friere, promoter of active pedagogies. His method not only teaches reading and writing, but also provides the tools by which to acquire a greater understanding of one’s world and society, to reach full exercise of social and civil rights. Hence the Intervita project title ‘Educating Citizenship’. A project where the students are not simply a vacuum to be filled with education but, on the contrary, the protagonists of an active pedagogy based first and foremost on the emerging needs of children and adolescents.
