Description of the projectHEALTH OBJECTIVE
In Pune, Intervita runs the Jagriti centre, specialised in the assistance and education of children suffering from cerebral palsy, aged between 4 and 18 years old.
Through recovery programmes combining various different aspects (physiotherapy, logopaedics, music lessons and manual arts), the young users are accompanied through a personalized journey to strengthen motor and cognitive skills.
The Jagriti centre also provides an external consulting service supplying personalized assistance to children who are not included in the programme, also through home visits and parent training. Reduction of maternal and infant death. Promotion of health in schools and communities.
EDUCATION OBJECTIVE
Intervita’s presence guarantees the operation of schools in the areas of Pune and Nashik. Children in conditions of poverty are allowed to attend school, supplied with stationery and books as necessary. Through the school, the students are also offered medical assistance. The teachers are supported by means of the supply of teaching materials and their preparation is improved with training courses. A specific programme is also implemented for the children of site workers, promoting the importance of the education of their children, with parents.
Most of the population live in the slums, where poverty is an integral part of day-to-day living.
Intervita has taken various steps to improve living conditions, particularly for children. First and foremost, the welcome centre for street children in the city of Nashik. This centre, founded in 2005, represents a safe point of reference for children aged between 1 and 15.
Here, they can wash, eat and receive medical treatment.
Professional educators and psychologists working at the centre have also recovered children with problems of drug addiction, relational difficulties and aggressiveness.
TSUNAMI EMERGENCY
In 2006, the reconstruction work on the village of Muttom in the region of Tamil Nadu was completed, following its destruction by the tsunami.
The population was guaranteed access to essential goods and services (housing, drinking water, health services, education). Specifically, the cooperation activity worked to obtain the following results: ex novo construction and restoration of homes, set-up of individual toilets for houses, creation of 2 wells and 2 cisterns for drinking water, distribution of sets of materials for fishing to local fishermen, distribution of teaching materials to students and professors, activation of a specific psychological support centre for children, in order that they could work through the trauma suffered.
